THE Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was one of the leading writers of the modernist movement and, although he did not speak English well until his twenties, he is now considered one of the greatest stylists of the English language. His experimental writing and often frightening themes did not make him particularly popular with the critics of his time. World recognition will come with his works Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, The Secret Agent, Through the Eyes of a Westerner – to mention the most well-known.
