Gaston Leroux (1868-1927) worked as a theater critic and foreign correspondent for Paris newspapers before abandoning journalism to devote himself to writing and establishing himself within a few years as the most important French detective mystery writer. His known works, in addition to The Phantom of the Opera, The Mystery of the Yellow Room, The Man Who Saw the Devil, The Haunted Seat and The Double Life of Theophrastus Longuet.
