Aplain-Jane's daughter's 31st birthday party explodes into a nightmare within a nightmare in Slaughter's latest standalone project. Andrea Oliver always felt inferior to her parents. Her father, Gordon Oliver, is a trusts and estates attorney. Her mother, Dr. Laura Oliver, is a speech therapist. Andy herself has never aspired to a career goal higher than serving as an assistant to someone important. It takes hours for a dazed Andy to realize that her mother is not at all what she seems to be, and by the time she's ready to accept the fact that Laura Oliver is a woman with a past, that past is already running and he has surpassed them both. We then follow Andy's harrowing escape into nowhere after Laura kicks her out of her home to finish a story from 30 years ago involving the Army of the Changing World, a group of amateur terrorists bent on striking down mortal greedy capitalists and ultimately, as it turns out, each other. Slaughter (The Good Daughter, 2017, etc.) never lets up on her trademark intensity, and fans will feel the story pumping adrenaline straight into their bloodstream. Long before the end, however, the deceptions, secret identities, hidden motives and double crosses will have piled up beyond the point of no return, leaving the story running on adrenaline alone.
Reading anything by Slaughter is like enjoying a particularly scary amusement park ride. Reading this book is like getting a season ticket on a ride that never ends.
