"Like champagne cognac" – the book that this summer will seduce you into an original reading experience May 24, 2022 – Posted in: Books

Usually in a detective book the main interest revolves around the culprit or murderer and so on. This is not another 'who done it' book. However, with all the virtues of a well-written detective novel, here Maria Leventi pioneers and introduces us to a new genre of detective literature, that of the detective novel of self-awareness. With a specialization in psychiatry, specialization in pharmacology and 13 different types of psychotherapy and with a master's degree in art therapy, it is no coincidence that she knows how to penetrate her literary characters and masterfully outline their psychological profile.

Another asset of her characters in her latest book "Like Champagne Cognac" just released by Floral publications is that they are based on true stories. So on the one hand we have 12 central heroes taken from life who on the other hand interact with the 12 archetypes of Carl Jung and the personalities of Hippocrates. "For a person to make a big change in his life, he needs a motivation" reveals the author in an interview about the book, and comments that "the biggest motivation for people is love". We will not reveal what role love will play in the plot of the book.

The narrative begins in the present day, in the era of the coronavirus, in Thessaloniki, but it also takes us to the heroine's childhood and to Patras, with the development of the book playing between two important events, the loss of the heroine's best friend in adolescence and to the heroine's boss being injured and hospitalized in intensive care and figuring out who did it and why.

The heroine of the book, Martha, has a super power, she has a heightened sense of smell or hyper-smell as she calls it, which she can use to decode events, perceive moments and above all to analyze people and be able to understand them and " reads" no matter how well they try to give another image of themselves. The olfactory imprints of people that only she can detect are also what will lead her to find the answers to the big questions of her life. "You choose with taste but you choose with smell" believes the author and her heroine guides us through a universe of familiar and familiar smells and at the same time deciphers other unknown ones that we either don't notice or don't recognize.

But in addition to the sense of smell, the heroine learns to trust her heart and listen to her instincts and use intuition. In an excellently written page turner with a fast and clever plot along with the heroes parade important issues that plague our society, the abuse of women is one of the fundamental elements of the plot. Family, the concept of love, friendship, family ties and clearly love are driving forces of the story and pivotal elements of the book that the reader does not miss no matter how fast they turn the pages.

Of course, what makes the book stand out is its power to put you face to face with the heroes, their personalities and motivations and makes you think about what you would do if not in their place but at least in a similar situation. Above all, however, the book awakens your desire to use and utilize your senses, especially the sense of smell, and even more intuition.

A book written in the era of the corona virus and because of the "stance" we were all forced to do during the quarantines, it pushes us and becomes a good reason through the true stories it deals with to redefine our values and find what is truly meaningful in our life.
