The aged lizard leaves a complaint, where lemurs and stone temples in the jungle are involved with love, pain, pirates, Christ and some imaginary diseases. It walks under the heavy veil of human suffering, but without the caustic acidity of urine and sulphurous fantasies, a measured sadness that accompanies the last restrained steps.
Burroughs in "One in a Thousand", his last fiction book, is brief, he says everything in a few pages, four or five things in particular - without chaotic openings in the writing, without extensive aesthetic experiences that tear landscapes inside us like tender blades to reveal behind them others, even darker. He is so tender here, more so than in all his other books combined.
