THE PAINTED TOMBS OF TARQUINIA

It is wonderful, the vigor and mystery of ancient life expressed by these faded figures. The Etruscans are still there, on the wall.

“The depiction has a vivacity and naturalness, yet exudes the pull of the fullness of an archaic meaning. The dinner is funerary and at the same time the deceased dines in the underworld, because the underworld was a happy place for the Etruscans. While the living feasted in life, the dead feasted similarly, with a woman offering him garlands and slaves serving him wine, deep in the underworld. Because life on earth was so beautiful, life in the world of the dead could only be a continuation of it."

D.H. Lawrence dazzles the ancient Italian city of Tarquinia (modern-day Tarquinia) and its famous funerary monuments with their colorful frescoes, captivatingly recreating with his pen a civilization that flourished 2,500 years ago.

About the author:

One of the most important English-language writers of the early 20th century, David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930), largely responsible for the change in the way literature treated romantic relationships until then, began his travels and wanderings even before the first his books are labeled obscene and banned in his native England. He was found living and writing in Germany, Italy, Australia, Mexico, the United States and France, where in 1928 it was first published in a few copies Lady Chatterley's Lover. In 1960, and after a much-lauded trial, the publishers of the uncensored version of the book in England were finally cleared of the charge of "dissemination of pornographic material".
