Ideas for actions inspired by "Dad"

Ideas on how to read and use the book as a bookseller, animator, teacher or as a parent who wants to enjoy it in an interactive reading with their children:

Materials

  • A low table or bench or some other surface on which the children can paint, along with seats or cushions.
  • Paint colors. We recommend crayons or crayons. If you are brave enough, you can also try temperas or finger paints.
  • Cards for painting (you will find them in the cooperating bookstores) or any drawing pad.
  • A clothesline attached low with colored pegs. There you can hang the children's drawings.
  • The "Dad" book so that the children can flip through the book (always with the help of an adult).

Instructions

  • You can just gather the kids and let them draw whatever they want.
  • You can also plan an action with the aforementioned materials.
  • You can also show the children the content of the book yourself and let them discuss it with you.
  • You can, before drawing, ask them to describe the most basic characteristic of their dad and encourage them to talk about internal characteristics as well.
For example: My dad has a big nose, my dad has no hair, my dad has the roundest belly, my dad has the strongest arms, my dad laughs loud, my dad is a big sleeper, my dad is always angry, my dad sings badly, my dad makes the best pizza, etc.
  • You can ask them to create with their imagination the best dad, giving each child a characteristic.
For example: The best dad will be as tall as an apartment building. The best dad will have a pinocchio nose and let me hold and swing. The best dad will only have eyes for me. The best dad will be able to hold his breath underwater for two and a half hours. The best dad will be invisible so I can always take him with me. The best daddy will be as soft as my teddy bear.
  • You can even have the kids think about which dad they would prefer if he wasn't human.
For example: If my dad wasn't human, I'd like him to be a snail so we could go everywhere with our house. I wish my dad was a sea urchin so no one would dare touch us. I wish my dad was Jupiter and we were throwing lightning bolts everywhere. I wish my dad was a shark so all the other fish would be afraid of us. My dad would like to be a big brown bear to eat the honey from the wild bees in the forest.

To get you into the spirit of the book, we're sharing a featured quote:

"For me, my job, my role,
as a father, he was…
...to protect you.
Let me hold your fingers to help you
in your first steps.
To teach you to tie your shoelaces,
to tidy your room, to avoid
toxic relationships
sorting through the trash, crossing the street...
Let me repeat "6 times 8, 48".
To encourage you, to argue with you, to applaud you,
to whisper "I love you"
to tease you, to put my voice on you sometimes,
feed you, wash you, walk you,
to guide you, to seek you,
to take care of you, to wipe your nose,
to comfort you
to set limits for you, to respect your every choice.
Let me explain how stars and babies are made.
To be present and involved, open ears.
I understood everything, but also nothing.
It's my job to let you fly
with your own wings."

A unique book that can be a valuable gift to those who are fathers, to those who may and want to be, but also to all the children who loved and love their fathers.

For her Father's Day -and every day- happy birthday to all dads!
