As K2 investigates the case with the help of his bright young assistant, Patricia, he discovers that the story behind Marie Mornstierne's murder actually began two years ago, when a group of politically active young people organized a trip to the mountains. There, one night, the group's charismatic leader – and Marie's lover – Falco Reinhardt disappears.

The questions are many: were the relationships between those friends and companions what they seemed? What did Marie see that made her run for her life that day? Could the two mysteries be connected to Falco's investigation of a pocket of Norwegian Nazis he suspected were still active?

It soon becomes clear that Marie's death is not just a complicated case, but that it will act as a catalyst in a sequence of grim events, which will bring K2 and Patricia face to face with their most dangerous and explosive investigation.
And as the duo work hard to piece together the evidence before Marie's killer can strike again, the inspector sadly fails to notice that his young assistant has problems of her own...
