THE Howard Phillips Lovecraft born August 20, 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island. Introverted, philanthropic and a lover of literature – but also of astronomy – from a very young age, Lovecraft spent long periods of his life isolated from the outside world. He began writing seriously just before he came of age and in 1923 began publishing his short stories in the horror magazine Weird Tales. He once said that "all my stories are based on the fundamental premise that common human laws and human emotions have no force or significance in the universe».
