THE ENDURANCE OF POETRY

The book "Matheos Moudes: The endurance of poetry - 20 years later", is a selection from the poetic and prose work of the theologian, poet and intellectual Mattheos Moudes (Chios 1935-Athens 2000), which is released on the occasion of twenty years since his sudden exile. Among other things, it includes an anthology of his poetic work, autobiographical texts and anecdotal works from his archive, saved and offered by his family, as well as rare photographs from his professional journey. This honorary volume does not aspire to take the form of a philological study, as the editor of the volume, Nikos Davvetas, characteristically notes in his foreword. Its aim is to make visible his intellectual heritage, and his contribution to Greek letters in troubled times.

Mattheos Moudes was born in Chios in 1935. He studied Theology and from 1961 he worked in Athens, in private education. In 1959, still a student, he started working in radio. He made many shows on biblical, folkloric and literary subjects. One of his most famous shows was the one entitled "Aegeus, root and duration", which lasted almost eleven years. From time to time he also collaborated with television. He published the poetry collections: Parakatathiki (1957), Isopedos diavasis (Fexis, 1963), The endurance of materials (first edition Ikaros, 1971, and second edition Kastaniotis, 1983), Ta antipina (Estia, 1982), Infant baptism (Kastaniotis , 1992). In 1963 he was awarded the prize of the Group of Twelve. He was a founding member of the Society of Writers and the Society for Studies of Modern Greek Culture and General Education, as well as the Open Theater of Giorgos Michaelides and had collaborated with many literary magazines and newspapers. He passed away in 2000.
