Lily's Promise
How I survived Auschwitz and found the strength to live
At the age of ninety-six, Holocaust survivor Lily Ebert made headlines when her great-grandson, Dov, used social media to track down the American soldier who freed her in 1945. At Auschwitz, Lily had promised herself that if she survived she would tell the world her life story. And now was her chance. The accuracy of the dates and events in her book, about her time in the Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, joins the chorus of other voices thanks to which we can approach the human experience in a world of utter dehumanization
In writing this book with her great-grandson, Dov Foreman, Lily lit her own candle and recognized the imperative to pass on its light and the responsibility of memory, from one generation to the next.
In the book Lily's Promise she writes about her happy childhood in Hungary, the death of her mother and two younger sisters upon arriving at Auschwitz in 1944, and her determination to keep her two remaining sisters alive. She describes the inhumane conditions of the camp and the small acts of defiance that filled her with strength.
Carrying the pain of the past forever inside her, she found the strength to
build a new life from scratch and reveal what he experienced with hope
may such evil never again befall any man.
"Absolutely riveting, honest, heartbreaking yet liberating at the same time!"
