SOUTHERLY
A small and sensitive story with a "living" marine illustration.
In the frozen seas of the North, the fisherman of the story spends his time alone playing the banjo. He finds on the deck of his ship a seagull with a broken wing. She gives him first aid and slowly makes a new friend. The two sea types enjoy each other's company. But time passes, the cold comes and the fisherman finds that his winged friend is starting to catch a cold. Something must be done! He doesn't have to think about it much, he immediately sets sail SOUTHERLY, in the seas warmed by the Sun and will be able to warm his little winged friend as well. Once there the bird will need to find its other feathered companions. The two friends, the fisherman and the bird prepare to say goodbye... And then?
A tender story that introduces children to concepts such as compassion, loyalty, care, giving and also separation, and creates the foundations for the formation of their character and their future life relationships. – Natalie Saba, Child Psychologist - Play Therapist, MSc Developmental Psychology
Duncan captures emotion with extraordinary sensitivity and his images balance cinematic snapshots of ocean life with kindness and humanity. – Publishers Weekly
Daniel Duncan's book is a hymn to friendship and selfless acts, compassion, giving, the need to do the right thing, but also separation and the feelings it creates. Will the fisherman be able to set his new friend free, will he be able to do what is best for the seagull, even if it means parting with him? –Zoe Koskinidou, www.kokinialepou.gr (online children's book magazine).
