In the short period of 14 days from the Kemalist attack to the capture of Smyrna, the High Commissioner's correspondence with the government, the information and proposals he submitted, the government crisis that broke out, the initiative for a possible Allied intervention in the city of Smyrna are revealed Smyrni and the unprecedented situation that developed with the refugees who flocked.

At the same time, an evaluation of the later explanations of the High Commissioner is attempted, which leads to the removal of erroneous impressions and consolidated judgments about the Asia Minor Disaster, based on the valuable material from the relatively unknown Aristides Stergiadis Archive.

 

About the author:

Konstantinos D. Vlassis was born in Athens in 1970. He comes from Messinia. He studied at USA and is holder BSc Bachelor of Computer Science and MBA Master of Business Administration – Management from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). Since 1994, he has worked as a freelance contributor to magazines of the special press, with his interest focusing on the study of the diplomatic and military history of Greece during the first half of the 20th century. In 2016, he obtained a master's degree from the Department of Political Sciences & History, majoring in Modern & Contemporary History, from Panteion University. He has also written the books: The Equipment of Greece (1936–1940), published by Doureios Ippos, Athens 2013, where archival material from the meetings of the Supreme Council of National Defense is highlighted. In the context of research on the Asia Minor Campaign/Disaster, he wrote the Refugees, Economy & Legislation during the Asia Minor Campaign, the disputed Law 2870/1922, "On the illegal transportation of persons in groups coming to Greek ports from abroad", published by Doureios Ippos, Athens 2020.
