PORNOGRAPHY – THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF CULTURE

A unique record of the history of pornography, from ancient times to the modern, digital age. The concept of pornography did not exist until the 19th century, although sexually daring images have always existed. The term "pornography" was invented by the Victorians in their attempt to categorize ancient "obscene artefacts" and deny common people access to them. Today, when we are bombarded daily by nude images and the various media - cinema, video, internet - spread all forms of pornography, how far is our behavior towards bold depictions from the behavior of our ancestors? Pornography is a purely cultural creation. The book examines the evolution of the concept through the different eras -from antiquity to the present day-, the limits of pornography and acceptable art, the way each medium shaped the type of sexual depictions and the correlation of erotic art with the respective frameworks of moral values , including an unparalleled collection of images. The British Isabel Tang is a writer, journalist and producer, and was responsible for the creation of the television series Pornography, on the British Channel 4 (Channel 4).
