THE CHILDREN OF THE SUN

Tribute to the great Greek astrophysicist

The scientific world lost a great man last August, Dionysis P. Simopoulos. The distinguished astrophysicist lost his battle with cancer, after first fighting it bravely, with all the positive energy and drive for which he was always distinguished in his life.

In January 2021 it was released by Acid publications the first book in the series "Secrets of the Universe", under the title "The Great Adventure in Space – From Icarus to Space Colonies". In the second book, which is now in circulation, his last corrections and notes have just been incorporated Dionysis Simopoulou. A book that managed to take care of him, just before the end...

"Secrets of the Universe" is a series of picture books, in which is presented everything that modern scientists have discovered in recent years, with the help of the instruments they have in observatories, accelerators, observatories and spaceships, about the various wonders that comprise the universe. Because the universe, and everything it contains, is full of secrets that are hidden in the bright paths of colorful stars and strange planets. Nevertheless, with each new generation nature lets us see deeper and deeper into the mysteries it hides. Because, as he said Aristotle 2,300 years ago: "All people who know him are hungry for nature", it is human nature to want to learn. And this is what makes us hunters of knowledge, experimenters and explorers, in an effort to discover "The Secrets of the Universe".

And while in the first book it is examined "The Great Adventure in Space", the age-old dream of man to walk on the surface of another world, which finally became a reality about half a century ago, in the second book a tour of our solar system is attempted.

The story included in this book, under the title "Children of the Sun", it is an ancient story. A story of search and exploration. A story whose main fruits began to appear just a few decades ago. Who could have guessed then that by the beginning of the 21st century would our knowledge of the Solar System have increased a billion times? Who could have suspected then that we live in an age that would once become a legend? An era that humanity will forever remember as the most incredible era of exploration that man has ever known?

There is no doubt that these exploratory missions have revealed to us dozens of strange new worlds, with terrifying storms, multiple moons, poisonous atmospheres and frozen surfaces. Worlds completely different from ours, although they all have something in common with us, because we share the same Sun and obey the same natural laws.

Because as the poet says: “We will never stop exploring. And the end of all our explorations will be to reach where we started and to know this place for the first time". TS Eliot
