For the group of unruly children who discover life in an idyllic suburb of the American '50s, everything seems to be going rosy. But the arrival of fourteen-year-old Meg, who along with her younger sister comes to stay with her aunt and cousins, dramatically disrupts the balance at home and the consequences for the two girls are nightmarish. Helpless observer and silent participant in the crime, little David, watching from next door torn between love and morbidity... Decades later, his narrative scratches a wound doomed to remain open forever.
The Girl Next Door is not just a bleak commentary on the trepidation of the human soul. In the dense darkness, the lost dream of innocence is presented in its entirety...

Jack Ketchum (1946-2018) published his first novel, Off Season, in 1980. Since then, he has received the Bram Stoker Award four times and in 2001 was named a Grand Master by the World Horror Convention, alongside horror legends such as Steven King, Clive Barker, Brian Lumley, Ramsay Campbell and Robert Bloch (who was his mentor). Many of his books have been adapted into films. Before deciding to become a writer, he was, among other things, a high school teacher, an actor, and Henry Miller's agent.

The only certain things in life are death and taxes, the saying goes, but I can add a third: Disney will never make a movie based on a Jack Ketchum novel.
