Volunteering is an expression of the principles of pluralism, participation, solidarity and subsidiarity. The phenomenon of voluntarism reveals an internal, systematic relationship between these principles. Specifically, volunteering is a form of self-organization of society (pluralism), which offers an important possibility for citizens to shape or modify social reality (participation) by the spontaneous and selfless provision of services that directly benefit "third parties" fellow citizens (solidarity), in a relationship of cooperation and communication with public institutions (subsidiarity).
