Terminal Station

I had this habit of always wanting to cross the empty wagon. I pretended to be late, let them all out, and finally walked down the deserted corridor to his first door. That's where I used to go; when I knew there wasn't another soul inside, when the lights on the train dimmed and its doors stood open, as if they'd just surfaced to breathe.

A well-dressed gentleman chattering, a young man setting up paper creatures in the carriage, a bicycle that doesn't fit in the place, a group of girls protesting in the rain, the most demanding war invalid, a rascal banging his cane on the windows and a second-hand ticket.

Stories from the short journey of the daily train, until the moment when the carriage is empty, just before the station becomes "terminal" and all thoughts start from this point.
