It is characteristic that the author himself could never have imagined that he would find such a fanatical audience, especially since, as he said, "it is neither related to Zen as the Buddhists understand it, nor does it contain substantial advice for the maintenance of a motorcycle". Never before has a book so incongruous with its title contained such lofty meanings that apply to everyone, even if they have never ridden a bicycle in their lives.
