WE, THE PEOPLE OF EUROPE
The constant struggle for the rights of European citizens
Introduction: Christos A. Fragonikolopoulos
MANIFESTO series
Which Europe do we want? What should we fight for? Susan George answers that the European Union can and must shape a sustainable alternative to neoliberal globalization, a different model of culture, a different social model.
What really concerns us here, too, is the famous deficit of democracy in the functioning of the European Union. European integration cannot be achieved without the will of societies. The bet remains the creation of a pan-European public space, so that citizens are really closer to decision-making.
The book was written before the Treaty of Lisbon came into force, and is essentially a voice of anguish and reflection, but also of optimism and militancy.
"Another Europe is possible", predicts and wishes the author at the end of the book. The struggle for the rights of European citizens is ongoing, and the adoption of the Treaty by all member states can turn from a lost opportunity into a springboard for its strengthening.
