An unheard of sacrilege is committed in the house of the great pontiff Gaius Julius Caesar, and four murders are connected to it. Decius Caecilius Metellus, who has just been elected senator, undertakes to investigate them, mingles with notorious leaders of the underworld and comes face to face with all the powerful of the time. But Decius is not alone – helping him in his difficult task are Caesar's charming niece, a quirky Greek gladiator doctor who also doubles as a coroner, and a young slave, Hermes, who will prove to be his most entertaining and valuable assistant. …

The SPQR books were written by John Maddox Roberts as a series of detective stories often based on real events, framed by historical figures and set in Ancient Rome, at the time of the overthrow of the republic. The initials SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanus – The Senate and the People of Rome) were the official name of the Roman republic.

John Maddox Roberts was born in Ohio and lived in various US states as well as Scotland, England and Mexico. When he was kicked out of college in 1967, he joined the army and served a stint in Vietnam – he was discharged but remained a member of the US Special Forces (Green Beret). The first book in the SPQR series, The King's Trick, was nominated for the prestigious Edgar Award for best mystery novel of the year.

From Oxy publications, the next books in the SPQR series will soon be available to you:
