Oxy Publications and the Society of Friends of Minos Volanakis present for the first time the translation of excerpts from the Palatine Anthology by the great director.
The edition is accompanied by a CD – an audio document in which Minos Volanakis himself reads and comments.
[...] This is the story in two words of the epigrams and in this form an incredible series of ghosts of Hellenism entered. I say ghosts in the sense that I am possessed over and over again. They are very lively faces. They are incredible presences throughout the ages. [...] So we have here poems that fascinated me a lot. […] And I have to say how I started to translate them. I started translating them when I was translating "Oedipus the Tyrant" into Greek. Systematically, as an exercise in economy of speech. And I found them very useful. But quickly, of course, it ceased to be an exercise. I became preoccupied with the text itself and these ghosts, and the result is that I translated, perhaps, more than I should have.
